What is SEO?

It stands for "Search Engine Optimization". SEO is a set of rules that can be optimizing your website for search engines like Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo, etc.  and refers to techniques that help your website rank higher in organic,Unpaid or natural search results on search engine, thus making your website more visible to people who are looking for your product or services through search engines.

How Search Engines work?

Search engines have one purpose to provide you with the most relevant results possible about your search query. But a lot of people have no idea what is happening behind that search box when they type their search query. So just how do Google, Yahoo, and Bing, etc work out what is on the web pages, what is relevant to your general query and which specific websites should be ranked highly?
For a search engine to be able to display results when a user types their search query, they need to have available information to choose from. Every search engine has methods for gathering and prioritizing website content. Regardless of the specific strategy or methods used, this process is called indexing. Search engines attempt to scan the entire online universe and index all the information so they can show it to you when you enter a search query.

Every Search engine is divided into 3 stages ie. Spiders or Web Crawling, Indexing and Retrieval.

Spiders or Crawling the Web:

Search engines use Googlebot or "spiders" to crawl over the web page in search of content. Once they finish scanning and identifying the relevant content, they copy the searched content and store it in a search engine database. While crawler scanning one web page, they make note of links to other web pages from this page and later scan the linked web pages as well & this process keeps going on for all webpages. It regularly visits sites like every month or day to look for updates or changes.

Web Crawler will collect the following information from a web page -
  • Website URL
  • Website Title
  • Meta Tag Information
  • Webpage Content
  • Link on the page and where they go

Indexing the Data:

Now that website information is stored in Search Engines Database, and used to provide the search results you can see on the search engine. indexing is the process of organizing the portions of data and web pages so they can be searched quickly for relevant results to your search query.

Retrieval:

When a search query is entered into a search box, a search engine analyzes pages within their index that are the closest match, then sorts and displays the most relevant results to the user.
The order in which the pages are displayed is scored by search engine algorithms, taking into hundreds of different ranking signals. Each web page is then given a ranking score.
To rank highly on the search engines, your site needs to score higher than all the other websites that are eligible to show up for a relevant search query, that can crawl and index your site correctly. otherwise, they will be unable to appropriately rank your website’s content in search results.
However, be warned that if you engage in shady methods and try to cheat the search engines, you will get Problem. Google is very strict on sites that try to manipulate their rankings and if you’re caught doing so, your website will get penalized and removed from the SRPs (Search Engine Results Pages).
The last step in search engine activity is retrieving the best-matched results for search queries, which is displaying the search result in the browser.
